Internal works involved converting four bedrooms into consulting suites and an office, the creation of two new consulting rooms, a staff kitchen, DDA toilet facilities, a utility room, reception and a waiting area.

The project was completed in September 2020 during the Covid-19 Pandemic, alongside Victorian Government Covid restrictions.

Epping Gardens

Type: Healthcare
Client: Heritage Care
Collaborators: Distinctive Décor (FF&E)
Size: 9,461m2
Location: Epping, VIC, AU
Status: Completed

Situated on a wetland and walking track, this two-level 148 bed aged care facility has been thoughtfully designed to reflect the natural beauty of its surroundings and make the most of the unobstructed views to the west. Oversized courtyards are sheltered from the predominant westerly winds and provide generous sunlight for resident amenity.

The majority of resident rooms and primary living areas on Ground and Level 1 have been carefully located to take full advantage of views and sunlight, whilst minimising building bulk at the street frontage to maintain street appeal and approachability. Exterior detailing and textures create a dialogue with the natural environment and enhance the feeling of belonging. The result is a unique, contemporary and welcoming facility that is enjoyed and admired by residents and visitors alike.

Belgrave Hallam Road

Type: Healthcare
Client: Confidential
Size: 9,938m2
Location: Hallam, VIC, AU
Status: Permit Obtained

This project consists of a 135-bed aged care facility split over 2 levels with an on-grade carpark, situated in a low-density residential zone.

The site borders Frog Hollows Reserve to the north and west, and Belgrave-Hallam Road to the east. These three significant interfaces required a considered and individual approach, ensuring suitable set-backs and provision of landscaping. In response, the building facades approach the interfaces lightly, at minimal points, and then angle away, allowing ample planting and landscaping at the junctions.

The architectural form is a contrast of light and solid elements, being glazing and brick, with a visually permeable structure to the canopies over the sitting and dining rooms. This creates a visual buffer between the wetlands and the building, ensuring resident privacy and an interesting and unique built form.

Chomley Street – Prahran

Type: Healthcare
Client: Heritage Care
Size: 7,338m2
Location: Prahran, VIC, AU
Status: Permit Obtained

A desirable address in any stage of life, this sought-after Prahran address was maximised to achieve an opulent 71-bed aged care facility over three levels, including a basement car park, on a compact site with residential neighbours on three boundaries. Due to its positioning in a distinguished Melbourne suburb, the elegant architectural design references the built fabric of the street and greater Prahran’s local architecture with a contemporary interpretation.

The facility is spread over three levels: Lower Ground level split with basement car parking, Ground level, and Level 1. A large central courtyard provides ample light and amenity for residents, and is surrounded by the primary public spaces including café, beauty therapy and entry lobby.

Findon Road – South Morang

Type: Healthcare
Client: Confidential
Size: 9,185m2
Location: South Morang, VIC, AU
Status: Concept

The compact site resulted in a dynamic design focusing on horizontal planes to minimise the building’s height in relation to neighbouring developments. Horizontal aspects such as balconies are given prominence and continued along the façade. The northern balconies are curved to enhance impact; the curves offset from level to level creating a juxtaposition as the building rises and allowing for great planting opportunities for each balcony. The offset curves continue on the Findon Road frontage, directing views from the sitting rooms and creating a dynamic built form addressing the road.

Nepean Highway – Mt Eliza

Type: Healthcare
Client: Confidential
Size: 369m2
Location: Mt Eliza, VIC, AU
Status: Idea

This project encompassed the design of an eight-suite mental health consulting facility incorporating General Practitioner and Pathology suites.

The project required some persuasive design to ensure the program fit on site with some tight development controls and a conservative council. The client requested a coastal look to the facility, which was achieved via the innovative design of the main feature elements, and the material palette including vertical timber cladding and standing seam zinc cladding.

The dynamic look of the main feature elements stems from the client’s request to pull natural light deep into the building. Our response was to create a wide and inviting glazed entry, and supplement this with highlight windows to the raised sides of the feature elements.

Taylors Road – Delahey

Type: Healthcare
Client: Kalyna Care
Size: 13,500m2
Location: Delahey, VIC, AU
Status: Stage 1 Completed

This project involved two stages of development. Stage 1 comprised a new 40 bed addition to an existing 102 bed aged care facility. Stage 2 consisted of a new 80 bed addition.

The breathtaking two-story built forms are situated to the west and south to take advantage of park vistas to the west and Taylors Road to the south.

Consideration has been given to neighbouring properties by keeping the interface with fine-grain residential lots towards the east at a single level, to minimise impact on local residents and help ease the planning process.

Forest Lodge

Type: Healthcare
Client: TLC Aged Care
Size: 64m2
Location: Frankston North, VIC, AU
Status: In Progress

A new 64m2 addition to an existing aged care facility, including hydrotherapy pool, change room and showers and an extension to the existing gym, this addition stands out thanks to its simple rectangular glazed form contrasting with the existing brick and tile building.

In response to the client brief for a light and visually connected addition, a contemporary and minimalist glazed box was conceived, providing ample light to the hydrotherapy pool and gym, and proudly displaying the new resident amenities.

With the new additions came a refurbishment to the access passageway, introducing soft and light finishes with a timber battened ceiling and vertical weatherboard-look wall lining, providing warmth and texture.

TLC Noble Gardens

Type: Healthcare
Client: TLC Aged Care
Size: 270m2
Location: Noble Park, VIC, AU
Status: In Progress

This project encompasses a new 225m2 addition to an existing aged care facility, including hydrotherapy pool, change room and showers, new gym, beauty therapy, two offices and a maintenance area. This sleek new addition provides a stark contrast with the traditional construction of the existing building.

The client requested a bright, prominent linkage between the old and new buildings. Our response was a contemporary, minimalistic curved and glazed façade that maximises the small footprint to achieve an increase in program above and beyond the client’s expectations.

With a simple connection to the main activity area and café of the existing facility, the new addition aims to expand upon the facility’s already excellent resident amenity.

Size: 9,687m2
Location: Whittlesea, VIC, AU
Status: Completed

Located in a growing region on the urban-rural fringe of Melbourne, this project required the extensive redevelopment of an existing 90-bed aged care facility, doubling it in size and transforming it into a 180-bed facility and medical centre. Key services such as commercial laundry, kitchen and service areas were relocated as part of the redevelopment.

Due to the rectangular nature of the site, a new central hub was created, offering two connections to the existing facility to enable ease of resident movement. To invigorate resident activities outdoors and provide attractive spaces for visitors and families, a bowls green, golf putting green and children’s playground were also achieved.
