Following the acquisition of a number of residential sites adjacent the existing Aged Care Facility, Melbourne Aged Care Architect Thextonsmith was tasked with creating a bold new face to this home with the master planning of a major extension. The new building ties into and enhances the existing accommodation and provides new facilities that will benefit all residents.
With the existing sloping site the proposal encompasses a lower level incorporating car parking, a commercial kitchen and laundry, and major back of house facilities, topped with four levels of single occupancy suites and communal facilities around a large courtyard. The design aims to maximise the density of the site without comprising the basic requirements of sunlight and daylight entering into rooms.
In total 215 new suites are proposed with the top floor having a series of premium suites and a large roof garden. Each level incorporates communal dining and living areas, kitchenettes and nursing support facilities. A winter garden and outdoor spaces extend living areas into the landscaped courtyards. The resident floor plans have been designed to consider pandemic operations, whereby the floor plates can be separated in two, to allow greater safety of the residents.
The primary street façade is clad in a series of hit and miss cut metal screens to act as both sun and privacy shading and break down the bulk of the elevation to provide a scale appropriate to the residential street context.
